Karen is a versatile international environmental and social consultant and educator.  She has a breadth of specialist expertise in both strategic and project-based, cross-sector research and consulting gained over the last 30 years. Equally proficient in English and French with a working knowledge of Spanish, Portuguese, German, and basic Arabic, Karen has additional postgraduate qualifications in law, environmental economics and teaching as well as current engagement with a professional doctorate   in sustainability education.

Karen’s interest in environmental and social sustainability is reflected in her diverse workload in three key areas:

1. Planning, preparation, analysis, review and implementation of:

  • Environmental & Social risk mitigation and project preparation for finance
  • Environmental and Social Management strategy, systems and processes (ESMP)
  • Community Engagement and Social Performance strategy and processes (CEP/SP)
  • Biodiversity and Ecosystem management planning
  • Site investigation of ecosystems, biodiversity, and communities
  • Social and environmental impact assessment reports, procedures and processes (EIA and ESIA)
  • Sustainability strategy and processes
  • Corporate Responsibility and Social Investment strategy and processes (CSR/SI)
  • Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14000) (EMS)
  • Social Responsibility systems (ISO 26000).

2. Interpretation and analysis of environmental and social policy, legislation and guidelines, including Human Rights, Corporate Social Responsibility, Social Investment and Financing for development.

3. Development and delivery of bespoke knowledge transfer, training and capacity-building materials, activities and workshops in the above areas.

In addition to her social and environmental background, Karen is also a published conservation science field researcher.
